So, one of my favorite movies is Pinocchio. And one of my favorite quotes is "Prove yourself brave, truthful, and unselfish, and someday, you will be a real boy" spoken by the blue fairy. Well, I think that blue fairy was onto something.
When I was a young mom, this quote was very dear to my heart, because this was the big vision I had for my sons. I used to call them gentlemen, even though sometimes they were rough-and-tumble crazy heads who were not so nice to each other. I really wanted to point them into becoming men who were brave, truthful and unselfish.
Honesty with yourself is wickedly frightening.
- It takes bravery to ask someone else's opinion about your behavior, and swallow pride to say thank you.
- It is very challenging to be truthful about your actual habits, and admit that the very things that make you mad about other people are PROBABLY things you do.
- AND, it is so incredibly hard to choose to be unselfish, when you want to be lazy, lying, and a general louse,
And I am talking about me as an adult.
Let's come alongside our kids in their development of their honesty. Let's be honest with ourselves first.
They are watching us like hawks, you know.
